#206 – Walking Without Pain For the First Time In Decades

Kim Mazzella has magic hands! I went to Hand & Ortho to receive therapy for my knees.  During treatment, my therapist Kim identified that my chronic hip pain could be helped.  After minor medical treatment, Kim did therapy on my hip.  After many weeks of therapy exercises and Kim’s hands-on treatment, I can truly say I am walking without pain for the first time in decades!  She not only knows the best course of exercises to prescribe, but her hands-on touch treatments accomplished more than exercises or medicine alone.  Kim was very genuine, personable, and was respectful of my tight time schedules. Her assistant Jenna was enthusiastic and encouraging in helping me get through those intense workouts.  Great team, incredible results! Thank you so much! –Melody

#205 – Very Lucky To Have Kim Mazzella After My Knee Surgery

I feel very lucky to have Kim Mazzella as my physical therapist after my knee surgery. When I began my physical therapy after 6 weeks of immobilization, I was frustrated with my stiff knee and slow progress.  Kim was very patient, knowledgeable and strategic.  She always thinks about causes of problem and comes up with different plans to solve these problems. In my case, she even went above and beyond by contacting and visiting my surgeon to discuss my status and treatment options.  She also contacted different suppliers to find the best durable equipment for me to do the therapy at home.  As a result of her caring and effective therapy, my knee flexion has been greatly improved from original 40 degrees to 130+ degrees.  I can walk, do Zumba and jog.

Jenna, assistant to Kim, was very friendly, energetic and experienced. When I was challenged during the therapy, she gave me her warm hands and held me through the bumpy journey to recovery. Kim and Jenna provide the best services to their patients.  Kim is always flexible to accommodate her patient’s schedules and is always there for her patient’s needs.  I will miss Kim and Jenna. The facilities are always clean and every employee there is not only professional but also friendly.  Whenever I made progress in the therapy, they cheered up for me and encouraged me to do more. I highly recommend Kim as your physical therapist as she is the best. You will have a speedy recovery in her hands no matter how challenging your situation is. -Ling

#204 – Transitional Triumph

Many thanks to Kim Mazzella for diagnosing and treating my hip and knee issues. Kim was able to identify and treat my issues and she created a plan for my self care to stay strong, balanced, and free of pain. Kim helped me to enjoy the ski season and I know she is there for me whenever I need help again. I loved the modalities and exercise plans that she introduced to me. Kim is so kind, fun, compassionate, and understanding in addition to being an excellent diagnostician. Connecting with Kim as my new PT has been a great help in my relocation to SLC. Thank you, Kim. -Kay

#203 – Comprehensive Program for my Knee Replacements

Having had both knees replaced in June and October 2016, I underwent therapy with Dave Moss and his team from July 2016 through January 2017. Dave’s knowledge and experience in providing a proper program for recovery from surgery is much appreciated. I could not have asked for a more comprehensive program. His on-hands therapy and direction were delivered with compassion for someone of my age. My journey to complete recovery continues based on Dave’s influence. -Gordon

#202 – From Hopelessness to Having Her Life Back through Dry Needling

I have struggled with back pain for over 2 years.  The pain was so severe I had to give up running and other physical activities, I couldn’t even walk quickly.  I could no longer travel because sitting was extremely painful, even having to push on the brake while driving was a major ordeal. I wasn’t even able to sleep at night for more than a few hours.  I saw multiple doctors seeking relief, took lots of medications just to get through the pain and allow me to sleep, and had multiple injections to try and alleviate the pain.  I had seen Todd on and off for this problem and while he was able to alleviate the pain for short periods of time I was still in pain most of the time and felt hopeless.  I had to completely adjust my active lifestyle and was in survival mode.  A few months ago Todd asked me if I’d be willing to try a new procedure called dry needling.  Figuring I had nothing to lose, I said, “sure.”  After the first treatment I didn’t have to take any medications for five days, it was amazing.  After each treatment the pain stayed away longer.  I have now had it done four times, it’s been three weeks since my last treatment and I still feel great.  I haven’t taken any medications for two months, and the best part is I can move without pain!  I can actually sleep at night, we’ve planned a couple of trips this summer because I can sit again.  A couple of days ago I ran three miles and it felt great!  I am forever indebted to Todd and his staff. Thanks for giving me my life back! -Sarah

#200 – Police Officer Gets Back on the Road After Microdiscectomy Back Surgery

In September of 2016, I had my second microdiscectomy back surgery. My first microdiscectomy surgery was in 2013, on the same disc L4/S5.

I started attending physical therapy at Utah Hand and Ortho a few months later, in December 2016. I was working with Dave Moss and his staff. This is the second time they have put me back together. My job as a police officer requires a fair amount of physical exertion and strength. Working with Dave and his staff helped me strengthen my core, legs and back all while getting me back into shape and back onto the road. It is/was a pleasure working out with these guys and I honestly looked forward to the challenges of the therapy/work out. I could feel and see my body getting stronger and my confidence in “getting” better soared as well.

Thank you guys at Utah Hand and Ortho, for getting me back on the road with my K9 partner T-bone. You are awesome.

#197 – Back to Dancing

I’m a dancer.  All of my current daily activities for both my continued education, experience, and career require me to be very active. I twisted my foot in late August by accident and had to put several things in my life on hold.  I saw Shonn Tanner at the Bountiful location for PT.  He and Joe were very attentive to my situation and were great listeners.  I was 100% sure that they understood my goals and wanted to help me recover as quickly and effectively as possible.

Shonn was smart about how much he let me attempt with dancing so that I would constantly be improving, but still not ever declining or losing the progress I’d made.  I was never in unnecessary pain or discomfort during recovery either.  Because of my diligence at both the clinic and at home, along with the continued guidance from Shonn about what I should attempt (because he did push me more than I expected), I was fully recovered by the middle of October, totally pain free. That was even earlier than we both thought I’d be back to dancing.  I’m so grateful I was able to go to them for help and experience a full and speedy recovery. -Savannah Smith

#194 – After a Positive Therapy Experience, Now in Pursuit of OT Career

In January 2012, I was involved with a machine accident where it caused me to lose my DIP joints for my right index and middle finger.  I had the pleasure to work with my OT Susan and she was a huge part to getting me back on my feet to go back to school.  She had such a great attitude and gave great exercises to allow my fingers mobility as well as strength with the exercises she assigned to me.

I have now graduated college with my Bachelors and am pursuing to continue my studies for OT to emphasize in Hand therapy.  I can’t thank her enough for helping me to get back on my feet. -Risa

#192 – With 2 Shoulder Surgeries and 1 Knee Surgery, Dave is My Rehab Guy

Where do I begin?

Last August I had my rotator cuff repaired. I had heard horror stories about the intense pain of rehab from other’s who had had the same surgery. I was scheduled to have my rehab with Dave and Steven at the 7th East clinic. I called ahead of time and asked if I should take any pain meds prior to arriving. Dave assured me that would not be necessary. After my first visit I was pleasantly surprised that there was no real pain involved but that I actually felt better after my visit.

Now fast forward to December and I had my left knee replaced. I knew exactly who I wanted to rehab my knee and that was Dave and Steven. We had several discussions prior to my surgery and they fully explained what I could expect and how long it usually takes to rehab a total knee replacement. Once again I was pleasantly surprised with the professionalism of Dave, Steven, and Brittney who interned there for a few months. Not only does my knee feel great but I now have two good friends who I will miss seeing and chatting with every week.

But wait! It gets better! I injured my good shoulder about 2 months after my knee surgery and guess who rehabbed that? Dave and Steven I can’t thank you enough for getting me back into my normal activities, for being there for me, and making me feel whole again. Also thank you both for the friendship. I may be the only person on the planet who will miss going to rehab because of you two. -Jack Attack

#191 – No Problem Too Big, No Person Too Small

I had two herniated discs in my neck.  Had I had surgery, my range of motion would have been almost nothing.  I would not have been able to drive hardly at all.  The surgeon said I could do therapy, but I would be wasting my time.  I have been to therapy with Steve and his team before.  I knew that if I could be helped, they were the ones that could make it happen. Every person that I worked with there, made me feel that they really cared about helping me to be able to function better.  Everyone always made sure that I did the exercises correctly so that it helped and did not cause more problems. I never felt that they rushed to get to someone else. The entire team was always available to answer any questions that I had. They were very professional, but friendly.  As busy as Steve was, there was rarely a time that he didn’t at least come by and tell me hi and ask how I was doing. I am doing great, but know that if I have a setback all I have to do is call. To me, they are my friends now and not just people that work where I went for therapy. I do not want to name names because I know that I would miss someone. They all know who they are and how much I appreciate all of their help. Thank you, Maurine

#190 – A Busy Professional Life and Quick Road to Recovery

I am so grateful to Dave Moss and Steven at Hand and Orthopedic Specialists on South Temple for their dedication and investment in my recovery.  I had suffered from a shoulder injury three years ago and finally had a surgery September 2015.  Given my professional life is so busy with lots of travel, it was imperative to me to have a great PT team to help me with my road to recovery as quickly as possible.  Dave and Steven were not only fantastic caregivers, but they felt like friends to me.  They always offered encouragement and pushed me to my limits.  I tend to physically overdo things and they knew exactly how to help me, working with my lifestyle to achieve great results and get me back to sport.  While it was a wonderful feeling to graduate from PT and be pain free, it was also a sad day because I knew I wouldn’t be coming each week to see my favorite PT team.  I highly recommend anyone with an injury to come see these guys.  They always offered a honest answer and helpful advice and treatments.   Thank you Dave and Steven! -Allison Beddard
